Quality Control

International rules on pineapple are especially defined by Standard No. 182/1993 of the Codex Alimentarius. Amendments were made to it in 2005 and 2011. The main elements of this legislation are detailed below.

The minimum average weight of a pineapple "Ananas Comosus L." must be 700 grams, except in the case of small size varieties which may be the minimum weight of 250 grams. Pineapples are divided into three categories according to whether they are of superior quality (Extra), good quality (Category I) or unclassifiable in the previous two categories (Category II). In each case statements, pineapple must meet certain criteria.

Calibration pineapples is either in relation to their weight, or according to the number per carton pineapple. In the first case, a letter rating is pineapple. It can go from A to larger (2,750 grams ± 12% with crown and 2280 grams ± 12% without crown) in H for smaller (800 g ± 12% with crown and 660 grams ± 12% without crown ). In the second case, the boxes may have a weight of 10 pounds, 20 pounds or 40 pounds depending on the different markets. For all classes, a tolerance of ± 10% (by number or weight) of a size immediately above or below that indicated on the package is accepted.
